Nonprofit Email Marketing Today…

The importance of quality email marketing cannot be overstated. In fact, a 2015 survey of over 1,500 nonprofits, email marketing was rated as the second most important communication tool available to nonprofits.

It was second only to actually having a website.

This is exactly right. All nonprofits need a website where people can go to learn more about your mission, values, and staff. That is the first step.

After that, all nonprofits need effective email marketing campaigns.

Interestingly, this same survey also showed that the top two priorities for nonprofits communications are “engaging the community” and “donor retention.”

What is the most effective and efficient way to do this?
You guessed it. Email marketing.

Unfortunately, most nonprofits just don’t know how to create an effective email marketing campaign.

Many are still stuck in the days of newsletters.

Why Newsletters are not the answer

Email blasts in the style of a newsletter are NOT the most effective way to structure your email marketing.

In fact, it might just be the worst way to structure your email marketing campaigns.
Yet, it is how the vast majority of nonprofits do it.

This is the result of a flawed mentality, “Everyone else is doing it so I guess we should too.”
Even the online gurus keep trying to offer advice on how to improve your newsletters.

It is time to kill the nonprofit email newsletter.

Let’s quickly explore why this works for snail mail print newsletters, but does not work for email.

Newsletters are great for print additions sent via snail mail because if people are interested in your newsletter then they will keep it somewhere where they can see it, and when they have time, they’ll read it.

Then every time they see it, or pick it up and read it, they are reminded of your organization and maybe they decide to pick up their checkbook and send you a donation.

The more content you could cram into a newsletter the better, because the longer it took to read, the longer they would keep it around.

The longer it was kept around, the more your organization was brought to the forefront of people’s minds.

This worked well for a long time.

So well, in fact, that when email came along and took the world by storm people thought,

“Well, I’ll just send my newsletter electronically and get the same result.”


Here’s why.

People get hundreds of emails every day.
Therefore, they are very selective about what gets their attention.
If it doesn’t get their attention, they don’t set it aside for later, it just gets deleted.

If an email is crammed full of stories, loaded with tons of content, then they don’t have the time to read it, so it gets deleted.

It does not sit around somewhere where it will be repeatedly seen.
It does not sit somewhere as a reminder that it still needs to be read.
It does not sit somewhere reminding people of your organization.
It gets deleted.

Save the newsletter for your printed snail mail campaigns.
Email needs to be treated differently.

There is another problem with email blasting newsletters.

Who sees it?

What if you wrote the best email ever written?
It set your list on fire.
Everyone donated!
Everyone volunteered!

But, that email was blasted to the entire list last month.

Now you need to write a whole new email for this month.
But what about the people who just subscribed?
They missed last month’s email that set everyone on fire.
They will never see that AMAZING email.
The will never get set on fire like everyone else.
